The Holly and the Ivy might be a bit tired, but most people love it. A member of our congregation was very upset at its exclusion from Singing the Faith as it is her favourite carol. Also, the new songs are OK if you have a large, youngish congregation. I attend a small, rural chapel with an elderly congregation. They love trying new songs, but some songs (unfortunately, like “Light a Candle in a Darkened Place” is quite difficult for them to sing. I also don’t understand what’s wrong with tradition and, let’s face it, we only sing carols at Christmas time, so it’s not as if we’re singing them every week. Personally, I’m not a fan of The Holly and the Ivy, but I understand where people who love it are coming from and I think it’s a shame that we don’t seem to take this into consideration when getting rid of perfectly good carols and hymns. Why can’t we have them all (with no word changes!).

No. 2564 was named Knight of the Thistle after the racehorse owned by Mr H. McCalmont which won the 1897 Royal Hunt Cup . [6] On 28 December 1932, whilst the locomotive was in Doncaster Works for general repair, new nameplates were fitted reading Knight of Thistle , which was meaningless both for the order and for the racehorse.
